A weekend away - December

A lot has been going on over the last month or so - there has been lots of Christmas crafting (& singing!) and all sorts. For today I thought I’d share some photos of the lovely weekend away we had towards the middle of December. I’ll catch up on the other stuff later when I can.

Me and Adam went up to the same place we normally stay in Yorkshire on the Friday morning as we had the day off work. We got there for lunch time and had an hour or so in the pub before going out in the evening to meet some mates and go out for pizza. We had a lovely evening catching up with them and then went for a couple of drinks in the club afterwards before heading back to the pub for a nightcap and bed.

On the Saturday morning I slept (as per usual at the minute!) and was woken up just before Adam’s brother and girlfriend were due to arrive. We had a lovely day with them. We took them into the pub as it opened to introduce them to it and get an idea if we thought they would like it there.

Then we went off for a walk. We went through the village and down to pooh stick bridge first. Adam’s brother went over the stepping stones to get there even though the middle ones were under water. This is always one of my favourite views - I know I’ve taken the same photo hundreds of times but I don’t care.
 And the other was isn’t bad either!
 The others went for a wander to see some old mine workings so I thought I’d just have a sit on a fence on the side of the Beck and watch the water. Other than making me feel like I needed a wee it was lovely!
When we were all back together we went off to see the spout and got some very rare photos of me and Adam together. Obviously on our own we can’t normally do that so here you go.
 I took this one of Adam but I think that’s really lovely too.
We had a really good time walking and chatting together. It was lovely to see Adam’s brother and girlfriend and get to know her a bit better. We were thinking of making it a longer walk but we only got back to the pub not long before it was going to close and by the time we’d had a drink it was too dark to set off again.

We had a nice evening just chatting and going back to the pub. We even played dominoes in the cottage after dinner and before we went back out again.

On the Sunday we went for a walk on the beach at Sandsend as we love it down there and we wanted to show the other two the slate beds with the fossils on. As most things do with Adam’s brother it turned slightly competitive when it came to finding fossils.

I found the first one which obviously was the most important thing. It’s a pretty good one as well.
 We also got some lovely photos of the views - the light was really nice with the low winter sun


We found some things living in shells in the rock pools


We had a nice time then wandering around Whitby and going for fish and chips before going back to the pub for the Sunday session. We stayed for quite a while enjoying everyone’s company - my mum and dad were there too. We had a lovely weekend.

Decoupage canvas and painting

This is what the test painting the other day has lead to... I found a tiny little canvas in a drawer - I think I received it in a kit at some point - and decided that I wanted to have a go at doing a little bit of painting. I didn’t want to paint directly onto the canvas so I thought I would decoupage it with newspaper before painting on it - no idea where that idea came from! Ooh - I was doing some other decoupage which you’ll see later and that’s what made me decide to do this. Anyway here goes. I decoupaged some newspaper onto a tiny canvas that I had.  Cut out a template for the paint to go inside Tried using blue tac in the back of the stencil to stick this to my canvas.  This didn’t work so I then went for tac on the canvas itself.  And I was all set up ready to paint  I went for the same tactic as on my favourite test piece - painting inwards from the outside of the stencil being careful not to let any of the paint seep underneath this time...

Abstract painting

Yey! This post means I’m ready for the big tah-dah moment. Last night I sneaked upstairs for a few minutes while Adam was hanging laundry out and getting dinner in the oven to put the final touches onto my painting. On Friday I had the day off so I managed to paint the green section then - with my new paint that had arrived so I had a pre-mixed geeen. It did feel a little bit like cheating using the pre-mixed green as it’s not a primary colour and the others I had mixed myself from primary colours but I just wanted to get the painting finished and I had ordered a green so it seemed a shame not to.  I got it all taped up ready to go and then started adding the green. The joys of having it pre-mixed is that it didn’t matter if I ran out of paint half way through as I could just add more quite easily. Finished tapestry

This has to be a pretty huge accomplishment as it’s been in the pipeline for a VERY long while. This is a tapestry I got and started when I was a kid - maybe my mum can remember when exactly - but the date on the fabric says 1998. I’m sure it can only have been a few years after that maximum that I started it. This has been sat around in my craft room doing nothing since we moved into our house about 8 years ago and just getting in the way. I finally picked it up as this lockdown is all about finishing things that have been started. This is all I could see of it for years. I started off working on the sky a little bit as I knew the bottom bit would be a bit fiddly with loads of different colours in little patches. Look at the difference in colour where I have just finished bits of the sky. It’s most obvious on the half white/half cream cloud at the bottom!
